Your Model Portfolio: What Really Counts

Your portfolio is your most important asset—and at the same time the most common weak spot among applicants. Not because there are no photos. But because the wrong photos can make real talent invisible.

What makes a strong portfolio is clearer than many think.

Quality beats quantity—always

Eight to twelve truly strong images are better than thirty mediocre ones. Casting directors review hundreds of books per season. What sticks isn't the longest book—it's the clearest.

What a professional portfolio should include:

  • A clean headshot (clear background, natural light)
  • Full-body images from the front and side
  • An editorial image (creative, moody, with concept)
  • A commercial image (authentic, likable, product-adjacent)
  • Optional: an action or fitness shot

What makes a photo "strong"

A strong photo shows the person authentically. It has a clear visual message. It's technically clean—sharp, well lit, subtly retouched. And it creates a reaction.

What it doesn't need: heavy filters, extreme post-processing, exaggerated posing. The more natural, the better—when the craft is solid.

The comp card: your model business card

The comp card (also sedcard) is an A5 or A4 card with your main image on the front and three to four additional images plus measurements and contact details on the back. It's the standard application format for in-person castings and should always be with you.

What many forget: the comp card must be current. A comp card from 2022 with a look from 2019 helps no one.

Digital portfolio vs. physical book

Both have their place:

  • Digital – for quick sharing with clients, agency profiles, e-castings
  • Physical – for in-person castings, always on hand
  • Instagram – as a dynamic showcase when run professionally

If you handle all three formats well, you're prepared in any situation.

How often to update?

At least once a year. More often if your look has changed significantly or a career step is coming up. An outdated portfolio is one of the most common reasons models stall at castings—not because they aren't good, but because they no longer look like their photos.

First photos without a professional photographer?

For the very first application to an agency, natural, clear photos in good daylight are enough—even with a smartphone. What matters: sharp image, neutral background, normal clothing, no heavy filters.

What an agency reads from that: your type, your measurements, your presence. That's enough for first contact.

Present yourself professionally

A strong portfolio starts with the right presentation and honest feedback.
